Arts Council

Don't Miss the New Version of the VS!

(From Katie Eisenhour)  I want to take a minute to pass along a reminder of the Scott County Arts Council’s annual Valentine Spectacular.  It promises to capture the audience with a DIFFERENT approach this year…but yet another fantastic evening of fine arts entertainment can be expected!!

**  “Shirley Valentine”  a one-hour play performed by SCHS alumnus Nancy Marcy is sure to be a hit!!  If you haven’t seen the spunk Nancy brings to a performance….be sure to take this in!!

**  Loren Janzen will dazzle the audience as the emcee for the “Spectacular”.

**  The Last Rezort have prepared a selection of memorable tunes from days gone by.  I heard some people think this event is a dance for Valentine’s sweethearts…..not so. It is the perfect night for Singles and Couples alike!!  It is POSSIBLE to dance….but don’t stay away because you’re not a “dancer”!

**  Some special musical selections will feature vocalists this year!!  You can expect to hear some sultry and swingin’ tunes from Alan Graham, Jeannette Raynes, Craig Ramsey, Julie Mason and even me.

**  The Majestic will start serving their delicious buffet at 6pm, with some music to set the mood.

**  The play “Shirley Valentine” begins officially at 7:30pm

**  Intermission features delectable desserts

**  The final hour features the jazzy and soulful melodies as only the guys from the Last Rezort can deliver.  Solos will be scattered throughout….and dancing is welcome…and even encouraged…but not mandatory!

There are still some tickets available….so contact Anne Crane to reserve YOURS (872-5738).  Go with friends…or take your sweetheart….but don’t stay at home on the couch!!

Songsmith Workshop

Thad Beach will conduct a week long “Songsmith” workshop. This five-day residency includes 15 classroom workshop sessions, a school assembly program and one community outreach program with the residents of Park Lane Nursing Home and Park Place. Children are guided in exploring the songwriting process, picking a topic of local Kansas history, heritage or culture, conducting their own research, creating questionnaires and conducting oral history interviews with community members in order to write an historical ballad.

Richard Pitts
April 5, 2011
Roots of Rhythm: Stories with a lot of Soul! Pitts continues the tradition passed down to him of sharing stories and drumming that illustrate African American history and culture. The stories represent how enslaved African Americans survived during the early years of our country and they also represent how racially diverse Americans came together to destroy slavery. What makes his performance unique is how he brings the audience into each story; having them actively involved in the singing, clapping, and deciphering the tale or song. He strongly believes it is through participation that people remember what's important.
The high school will participate in Community Drum Circles. A Drum Circle is where Richard provides drums for a group of students and teaches them how to play. As the facilitator, his main role is to provide instructions and teach a few rhythms. Once a few beats are learned, the drum circle plays along while Richard shares a tale!
