An excellent opportunity to view and learn about Scott County history awaits you on 2 October 2011.

The new Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection at The El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City, Kansas is currently hosting the 2011 First District Congressional Art Competition. You are welcome to visit the gallery to view submissions from District One high school students.
This year’s competition is divided into seven categories: paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography. Awards will be given in each category and will be announced by Congressman Huelskamp at a reception on Sunday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection, at 902 W. 5th Street in Scott City, KS. The Scott County Historical Society and the El Quartelejo Museum are sponsoring the award money for "Best in Show", 2nd Place, and Honorable Mention.
The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. “Every day I walk through the Cannon Tunnel of the Capitol Complex and see students’ artwork from across the country adorning the walls,” Congressman Huelskamp said. “It is a wonderful program, and I look forward to receiving new submissions from Kansas students.”
The El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection are sponsoring a brand new art competition for Scott County artists! This inaugural years' theme is the Kansas Sesquicentennial. The contest will be held in conjunction with the "Drive the Byway" celebration on the weekend of May 7-8, 2011. The board members of the Scott County Historical Society would appreciate your help in distributing this information and promoting this wonderful opportunity for local artists! The artwork will be on display in the beautiful Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection. An entry form may be printed off by accessing this link: Art Entry Form
If you are a local business and would help by posting a flyer on your bulletin board or door, please feel free to print one off: Art Contest Flyer
The theme of the contest is the Kansas Sesquicentennial! The 150th Birthday of the great state of Kansas and the unique opportunity to have your artwork displayed in the new and beautiful Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection. Artwork is to reveal the importance of the theme. Each piece should incorporate an essence of Kansas and be a manifestation of the state’s heart and soul. We hope you will participate and encourage the artists in your family and circle of friends to create a tribute to the great state of Kansas! 2010 has been an exciting and challenging year for the Scott County Historical Society. We have made many changes, experienced some gains and suffered some losses. Moving the gift shop into our former meeting room caused us to cancel the Ladies Tea last spring and the Ice Cream Social last summer, but we're hoping both of those popular events may somehow be resumed.
The Grand Opening of the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection was a major event in Scott City in May, and was well attended. Extending our summer hours allowed visitation by many more travelers. Of course extra hours meant hiring more part time staff and finding volunteers to fill those hours. Our members have filled hundreds of volunteer hours since May, and we thank you. More than 40 volunteers, mostly historical society members, helped with the grand opening, and many volunteered for regular shifts through the summer. Read more...
