The new Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection at The El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City, Kansas is currently hosting the 2011 First District Congressional Art Competition. You are welcome to visit the gallery to view submissions from District One high school students.
This year’s competition is divided into seven categories: paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography. Awards will be given in each category and will be announced by Congressman Huelskamp at a reception on Sunday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection, at 902 W. 5th Street in Scott City, KS. The Scott County Historical Society and the El Quartelejo Museum are sponsoring the award money for "Best in Show", 2nd Place, and Honorable Mention.
The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. “Every day I walk through the Cannon Tunnel of the Capitol Complex and see students’ artwork from across the country adorning the walls,” Congressman Huelskamp said. “It is a wonderful program, and I look forward to receiving new submissions from Kansas students.”
