Entries Now Being Accepted for the First District Congressional Arts Competition

Winning Artwork to be Displayed in U.S. Capitol

(DODGE CITY, KAN.)  – Congressman Tim Huelskamp announced today that entries are now being accepted for the 2011 Congressional Arts Competition.  All high school students in the First Congressional District are encouraged to participate in this competition.  The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.  “Every day I walk through the Cannon Tunnel of the Capitol Complex and see students’ artwork from across the country adorning the walls,” Congressman Huelskamp said.  “It is a wonderful program, and I look forward to receiving new submissions from Kansas students.”

The new Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection at The El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City, Kansas will host the 2011 competition.

This year’s competition is divided into seven categories: paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography.  All submissions must be received between Tuesday, April 5th and Friday, April 8th during the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Jerry Thomas Gallery at 902 West 5th Street in Scott City.  Awards will be given in each category and will be announced  by Congressman Huelskamp at a reception on Sunday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection, at 902 W. 5th Street in Scott City, KS.

Prepare yourself to be taken on a journey into the history, wildlife, and beauty of the old west in the Jerry Thomas Art Gallery and Collection. The beautiful gallery building, designed with Southwest architectural accents, is a spacious 5,000 sq ft, state of the art facility adjoining the El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City, Kansas.

The gallery houses a beautiful array of original artwork by renowned artist Jerry Thomas. Jerry’s penchantfor realism, incredible detail and historic research and facts has become legendary. His work resides in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and abroad. The visitor is treated to an awe-inspiring look into the creative process of Jerry’s award-winning artwork at the media communications and history center.

This facility gives the audience a glimpse into the inspiration behind Jerry’s work and  leads them through the development of each piece of artwork. The viewer will be fascinated by the histories, stories, people, wildlife, and landscapes that are involved and influential in Jerry’s work.  A special story of the “People of the West” is waiting to be discovered. Patrons will also be entertained by the fascinating and beautiful collection of western Heritage items and relics, including items actually used by Jerry in the creation of his paintings.

These collections include beautiful Native American, Civil War, Indian War, and cowboy trail items. The Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collections is definitely a must see destination point for wildlife and western art enthusiasts and those who appreciate the stories and memorabilia of the old west.

Biography of Jerry Thomas

Jerry Thomas graduated from Scott Community High School in 1977.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, and worked towards a Masters Degree in Architecture, Community Planning and Development from Kansas State University.  In 1986, Jerry became a full-time artist with the encouragement from a group of businessmen that formed a partnership to market Jerry’s artwork in the U.S. and abroad.

As a native Kansan, Jerry Thomas was drawn at an early age to the excitement and nostalgia of the Wild West and its natural surroundings. The wildlife, the trails and the history of the West, all became an important inspiration for Thomas and his paintings. His attention to detail and countless hours of research have become a hallmark of his images, which are displayed in many private and corporate collections. Read more...
